2015 JAMES HALLIDAY AUSTRALIAN WINE COMPANION

Five Star Rating

The latest reviews for our wines have arrived courtesy of the new release of ‘The Great Man’s’ annual compendium. We are thrilled to have retained a five-star winery rating and we’re equally impressed with the high scores and the kind words from My Halliday. The reviews for our wines can be seen here below, but we do encourage you to grab a copy of the new book (from your local, independent bookstore of course) because it contains a huge amount of information for Aussie wine lovers.

2012 SCHILLER SHIRAZ
Score: 96
“Has the excellent colour of all the ’12 Schwarz Shirazs; a more profound wine, with a supple, deeply fruited palate, black fruits to the fore, but again that lovely, almost juicy, edge to the finish. It’s tempting to say the wine is not as intense as the Nitschke Block, but I think it is, the extra flesh and (well-disguised) alcohol providing extra depth of flavour to deal with.”

2012 NITSCHKE BLOCK SHIRAZ
Score: 95
“The grapes come from the family-owned Bethany vineyard, dry-grown and producing intensely flavoured grapes; it was wild yeast-fermented with the inclusion of whole bunches, basket-pressed, and not filtered. Remarkably intense, focused and powerful, with significantly deeper fruit flavours, the whole bunch not as obvious as it is in the Meta Shiraz, but still providing an extra degree of complexity, and a distinct lift on the finish. A wine about variety and place, not oak.”

2012 DUST KICKER GSM
Score: 95
* Special Value Rating (Wine considered to offer special value for money)
“A 50/30/20% blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Has a lot going for it, with a flare of bright red fruits across the palate at the moment of entry, showing that the fragrant red fruits of the bouquet told the truth; the texture and length are particularly good, as is the aftertaste. Way above expectations, and great value.”

2012 META GRENACHE
Score: 94
Hand-picked, wild yeast-fermented with 77% whole bunches; neither fined nor filtered; 54 dozen made. Joins with Yelland & Papps in successfully challenging accepted wisdom among Barossa Valley makers of Shiraz and/or Grenache. It is fresh and vibrant, with all the red fruits one wishes to see in the variety, the palate smooth and medium-bodied, the finish enlivened by acidity.”

2012 DUST KICKER SHIRAZ
Score: 94
“Includes 12% Mataro; 650 dozen made. It is a fragrant and elegant medium-bodied shiraz, with a spicy edge to the bouquet, and seductive mouthfeel and flavours on the well balanced palate.”

2012 META SHIRAZ
Score: 93
“Hand-picked, wild yeast-fermented with 22% whole bunches included in the ferment, bottled unfined and unfiltered; 125 dozen made. Bright, clear colour; the bouquet has a complex, pleasing edge of bramble and stem, characters that continue directly onto the medium-bodied, lively and gently savoury palate. So far, the Barossa has not shown much interest in whole bunch inclusion, but this wine should encourage others to experiment. It’s not a nostrum for success, but certainly works well here.”

2012 META MATARO
Score: 93
“Hand-picked, wild yeast-fermented with 20% whole bunches; bottled without filtration or fining; 50 dozen made. Good depth to the colour; a faintly smoked meat edge to the bouquet accompanies black fruits that run into the firmly structured, medium-bodied palate, which breaks free on the back-palate and finish into a juicy burst of pure flavour.”

2012 THIELE ROAD GRENACHE
Score: 93
“The family-owned Thiele Road Vineyard, situated at Bethany Creek at the foot of the Barossa Ranges, grows 70-year-old deep-rooted Grenache vines. Fermented with wild yeast and whole bunch inclusion, basket-pressed and not filtered, the wine is closer to traditional Barossa Grenache than Meta, but is its own master, with its luscious varietal fruit and rounded finish. 250 dozen made.”

2013 DUST KICKER CHENIN BLANC
Score: 90
“Well above average, with attractive, juicy fruit salad flavours, with plenty of grapefruit in the fruit salad. 250 dozen made.”

2013 DUST KICKER ROSE
Score: 88
“A 55/45% blend of Grenache and Mataro; 265 dozen made. Pale salmon-pink; possibly autosuggestion, the bouquet with spicy/dusty aromas, the palate with an earthy finish.”
