The Nitschke Road Shiraz block was planted by my mother and father in 1968 in Bethany near the base of the Eastern Barossa Range. The vineyard is still pruned and picked by hand and the soils of loam over brown and red clays results in a wine of considerable concentration and drive.

Rich, opulent fruit is the reoccurring theme with this vineyard and it always seems to show great balance and texture year in, year out.

The Nitschke Block Shiraz was the first wine made by Jason Schwarz back in 2001.

Power meets vibrancy. Aromas of blackberry jam, warm earth, prosciutto/charcuterie, which leads into a further suggestion of saline notes, via brine and soy sauce. Has great focus on the palate, black fruits, mulberry, that saline/umami component giving balance; a decent fist of tannin here but they’re ripe and fine. Creosote/tar, and sweet blueberries reveal further with air in the glass. For me, still Schwarz’s most classically Barossan expression of Shiraz, though maintains the house style of freshness and approachability.

95 POINTS - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2025

This wine beautifully combines power and elegance. It offers aromas of blackberry, cake spice, cured meat, dark cocoa, and cedar. On the palate, it is wonderfully concentrated, providing excellent weight and a silky flow, all supported by layers of velvety tannins. The finish is impressively long and satisfying. At its best: now to 2040.

95 POINTS - Shanteh Wale, Winepilot, August 2025

A spice box of perfume from another time. Lavender, sandalwood and cardamom hits you first but you are drawn in further with the crimson aromas of mulberries, bilberry and christmas cherries. It’s concentrated out with airy florals that clean lift you up and out of your seat, the pure tahitian vanilla bean its intoxicating and befitting for the depth of ripe fruit. It cleverly continues on the enticing theme with a chew to the integrated tannins and an elegance to the natural acidity. Seamless in its promising aromas and delivery of flavour on the palate. Dried blackcurrant, sapote and dark tea on the finish. A celebration of old vines loving tended in the Eastern Barossa range. This calls for slow cooked meats, oxtail and inky gravy. Drink now or will cellar well for another 6-8 years further.
