The family Grenache block on Thiele Road in Bethany remains one of Jason’s favourite blocks. The first vintage of the Thiele Road Grenache was made by Jason Schwarz in 2002 and celebrates his love of this diverse variety. The gnarled, old vines were planted in 1941 and they produce fantastic fruit.

More Information

Pours a varietally correct dark ruby shade.  Out of the blocks with aromas of strawberry compote, fresh forest berries and prosciutto, revealing rose petals with more air.  On the palate, we get stewed and fresh rhubarb and wild blackberries/forest berries, though it’s the crisp tannic lines which define this vineyard are perhaps its most striking element. Medium bodied, full power with no shortage of concentration and complexity, a beautifully pitched, weighted and structured release.

Vines were planted in 1941 and speak of their site with the rouge tones of Gala apple, and the precise clarity of fresh cranberries. Some nectarine and rainier cherries too. Fruit arches on the palate with a robust ripeness and some dried raspberry seed, leaning towards a brittle gum bark. A kernel nutiness mid palate and long line of acidity ensure the flavours continue to echo. This is uniquely poised and delicate coupled with a density of flavour and long length of fruit and earthy tones. A very good representation of the place. Drink now or will cellar another 4-5 years. Think along the lines of pork medallions in bacon or pancetta.

Silky and incredibly moreish, you won't lose with this Grenache in your glass. From a vineyard planted in 1941, it was wild yeast fermented with 12% whole bunches and aged in seasoned French oak for twelve months. Not filtered or fined as Jason Schwarz loves best.Wonderfully aromatic, it sprints from the glass with scents of baked red cherries, rhubarb and crushed red petals. Blueberries and blackberries add further interest and detail as fine spices are seemingly handplaced with precision framing the palate. The length is magic as it delivers a fabulous moreishness. Not to be outdone, a flash of red apple makes a late charge. A great drink, well played.

93 POINTS - Campbell Mattinson, November 2025

Beautiful grenache. Light and flavoursome at once. Raspberry, earth, ferrous notes, mint and lavender characters shape into toast, rust and woodsy spice. There’s good ripeness to the fruit here but the wine still presents as fresh and vigorous. There’s an attractive interplay between sweet fruit and more savoury, spicy notes too. This is a very good wine.
